Track competes at Yowell Invite

On Saturday, April 22 the Fairbury track teams headed to York to compete in the Jerry Yowell Invitational. The invite consisted eight teams, with most teams in Class B. The boys team had a rough day at the invitational and finished in eighth place.

“Honestly we didn’t finish where I wanted to. We were last place and that’s not where we want to be. We have always done a good job in field events, but we have got to get better on the track,” head boys track coach Derek Garfield said.

On the girls side the Lady Jeffs also finished in eighth place in the team competition. Jaelle Johnson ’20 scored some major points as she finished runner up in the high jump.

The next competition for the Fairbury track teams is Saturday, April 29 as they travel to Centennial to compete in the Southern Nebraska Conference track meet.

On Thursday May 12, the Fairbury Track teams headed to Crete to compete in the districts. There were 10 teams competing at the meet. The Jeffs qualified three athletes for the state meet.

Mikasa Lierman ’19 was the lone qualifier for the girls team, as she got third in the 800 meter run. On the boys side both Brent Hirsch ’17 and Patrick Ondrak ’17 punched their tickets to Omaha. Hirsch qualified in both the 800 meter run and triple jump, while Ondrak qualified in the 3200 meter run.

Head Boys Track Coach Derek Garfield has high expectations for the state qualifiers.

“We expect them to compete as hard as they have all year long, and if they do that, we should bring home some hardware,” Garfield said. The state track meet is held May 20 and 21, in Omaha at the Omaha Burke Stadium.
