Helping those in need stay clean

Over the past week, the Jeffs’ Market located outside of Dr. Emily Winter’s room has been collecting some promising goodies for students – hygiene products.

This helpful drive was promoted by Dr. Winter, as well as the Energizers’ sponsor Emily Steinhoff. All Period 8 classes were encouraged to bring in deodorant, toothbrushes, shampoo & conditioner, and other useful products to donate to the Jeffs’ Market. The class that brought in the most products was rewarded with a pizza party paid for by Energizers.

“It makes people feel good knowing they helped someone.” student Shelby Klaumann ‘21 said. “It’s for a good cause.”

This ‘contest’ was designed to help make the students feel better about themselves. It’s not easy publicly voicing what one might need, especially basic needs. The Jeffs’ Market allows those students to gather all the basic essentials whenever they need them, while at the same time boosting their self-esteem.

“I think they’ll be pretty happy to get basic needs stuff.” Makenzie Mills ‘22 said. “People take that stuff for granted until they don’t have it.”

This donation drive will be very helpful to many students, as now they finally have the chance to receive hygiene products for free. Those students that were not able to afford simple necessities now have the opportunity to just grab whatever they need, whenever they need it.

Although the products are short lived, the message provides a positive impact moving forward.

“The products themselves won’t last long, they’re consumables.” Dr. Winter said, “But, when the students go out into the world, I hope they always remember Fairbury staff cared about them, so that they continue giving as adults.”
