On Wednesday, April 24 the high school Quiz Bowl team traveled to Holdrege for State Quiz Bowl. The students that attended state were Brylee Yantz ’21, Brynn Novotny ’21, Isaac Robertson ’19, Nichole Harris ’19, Josephine Blatny ’20, and Jayson Klaumann ’19.
“We have gotten third place at the ESU quiz bowl the previous two years, which means we were only one place away from going to state. I am glad we finally got the chance to showcase our knowledge, and prove that even a smaller school like Fairbury can perform well.” Klaumann ’19 said
Fairbury made it through 4 rounds at State Quiz Bowl. State had two teams from each ESU in the state which means there were schools of all sizes. The team went 2-2 for the day. They had two wins at State against Sioux City and Nebraska Lutheran which they came up from behind in both matches. Fairbury then took its first loss against Elkhorn South. This loss put the team in the losers bracket where they had another loss to Norris to end their run at State.
“It was very rewarding to see the team win the ESU tournament and go to state. Some of the seniors had missed qualifying for state by one match for the last two years, so it felt good to finally make it. It was fun to have one last big trip and tournament together. I kept telling them that getting to state was a big deal, and if they won a few matches while we were there, that was just the icing on the cake.” Advisor Abby Jones said.
The team had a good run at state for the first time in a long time. This was a great experience for the students and also for the advisor. The Quiz Bowl team was able to make it to state during Quiz Bowl Advisor Abby Jones’ last year here at Fairbury High School.
“I think it’s amazing that the team got to state for Ms. Jones’ last year and for the seniors’ last year!” Yantz ’21 said.
