Track athletes compete at 3rd annual Track & Field Festival

On  Thursday of last week 21 Fairbury track athletes traveled to Papillion to compete in the 3rd annual track and field festival. The Nebraska Track and Field Festival is filled with the best of the best athletes throughout the state. Every school in the state is invited to compete and bring their best athletes. The Lady Jeffs took 12 varsity athletes to the meet and the boys track team had a total of 9 athletes that competed at the festival.

The Jeffs had a successful day at the festival with multiple athletes placing. Janessa Swanda ’19 placed 11th and Jami Mans ’22 placed 12th in the 100 meter hurdles. Junior Sarah Huss placed 4th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1: 01.77. In the 3200 meter run, Josephine Blatney ’20 ran a time of 12 minutes and 49 seconds which got her 4th place.

The girls 100 meter relay had a placed 9th with a time of 54.77 seconds. The athletes who competed in the relay were Mikasa Lierman ’19, Cora DeBoer ’20, Ellie Ohlde ’21, and Claire Shumard ’20. Senior Mikasa Lierman also placed 11th in the 800 meter run. Freshman Jami mans placed 14th in the 300 meter hurdles. In the 1600 meter run Blatny ’20 placed 18th with a time of 6 minutes and 11 seconds.

The lady Jeffs had great success in the 400 meter relay earning them 4th place at the meet. Girls Discuss also had a successful day with Sara Huss ’20 placing 2nd and Jessa Eden with a place of 3rd. Sophomore Mikwena Lierman placed 10th with a jump of 4′ 10”. Ellie Ohlde ’21 and Claire Shumard ’20 also placed in pole vault on Thursday. Ohlde ’21 and Shumard ’20 both placed 10th with a vault of 9 feet.

“I enjoyed our 4×4 [relay] the most at the festival because I felt like I ran good and our team placed 4th.” Lierman ’21 said.

The boys track team also had great success at the meet. Freshman Zane Grizzle and Senior Brandon Hinrichs both competed in the 400 meter dash, Hinrichs placed 11th with Grizzle right behind in 12th place. Grizzle also placed 19th in the 800 meter run. Dillon Weichel ’19 had a good race in the 110 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. Weichel placed 8th in the 110 hurdles and 7th in the 300 hurdles.

Fairbury’s 100 meter relay placed 8th at the festival. The relay team was made up of Chance Amundson ’20, Seth Firmanik ’20, Josh Roberton ’21, and Brody Kroll ’21. Sophomore Dylan Starr also had a fantastic day in high jump with a jump of 10 foot which placed him in 5th. Isaac Robertson ’19 jumped a distance of 40′ 9” in the triple jump which earned him 4th place at the festival.

For the 21 track athletes that participated at the Nebraska Track and Field Festival it was a great experience for them to get a feel for what it will be like to compete against the best of the best at state.

“If you were to go to state track, I think the festival is a very good reality check. Most of the people that are winning their events at the festival are most likely going to be the top athletes at state. It really lets you know how hard you are going to have work.” Zane Grizzle ’22 said.
