Speech team enjoys state experience

The Speech Team travelled to Kearney on Thursday, March 21 to compete at the state speech meet. There were five state qualifiers. This was the first time current speech sponsor Aaron Leibel has taken a student to the state meet.

“I think the competition went really well overall,” Leibel said. “There were just some things the judges were looking for that we did not provide them.”

Leibel said that he learned a lot from his first state experience. He figured out what the judges were looking for in the events his students participated in and is hoping to apply those things next year.

“Those judges that day wanted to see a certain thing, and next year that could completely change,” Leibel said. “That is why we go to a variety of meets to see a variety of judges to get a wide variety of what judges want. It’s tough in the sense of different judges want to see different things in different categories. It’s tough, which is why I try to credit my kids as much as possible for hanging in there.”

For the senior state qualifiers, it was their last meet of the year. Jayson Klaumann, Taylea Mills, Nichole Harris, and Michaela Buchli were all senior state qualifiers. Mills has been in speech for all 4 years of her high school career.

“Being in speech has helped me develop a new confidence in myself,” Mills said. “I love my team. I never knew how close we would grow as a team, and we have developed friendships that mean the world to all of us.
