Two Jeff wrestlers bring home bronze

From February 14-16, five Fairbury Jeff wrestlers traveled to Omaha for the state tournament. They wrestled at the Century Link Arena which has a 17,000 person capacity. The five qualifiers were Ace York ’19, Brandon Hinrichs ’19, Carson York ’20, Seth Firmanik ’20, and Domenic Hyson ’22.

“It was awesome, there were so many people and it was the biggest place I had ever been for wrestling,” Hyson said.

Senior Ace York and Junior Seth Firmanik both brought home bronze medals. Ace York also recorded his 100th career win after he won his quarterfinal match ensuring a state medal.  Ace York has wrestled for fourteen years and finally accomplished an unforgettable goal.

“It was a feeling I could never explain. I never expected to get a medal and my 100th win in the same match,” Ace York said.

The wrestling team grinds all season long to reach two goals, making it to the

state tournament, and making it onto the podium while there. For example, Coach Derek Garfield has a saying, “Pursuit of February.” To just make it to the state tournament in February is an amazing accomplishment.

“Pursuit of February means that we want to be wrestling our best by the time February gets here,” Garfield said. “February is what I call Championship month.  When the month of February is here, our wrestlers need to be peaking with their best performances.”
