This past weekend, the Lady Jeffs Softball Team traveled to Seward for their home invite. The team had a 3-0 record throughout the tournament, bringing home the gold.
To kick it off, the Jeffs defeated the Aurora Huskies 9-0. Junior Raven DeFrain held the Huskies to a one hit game on the mound with 10 strikeouts, leading the Jeffs to the tournament semifinal.
The team then took on the Seward Bluejays. They battled back and forth but in late innings, the Jeffs took the lead and held on for a 5-3 victory.
The Jeffs lastly took on the York Dukes for the tournament championship. Fairbury fell short by one run the previous time they played York. Tied at one run, the teams went into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Claire Shumard ’20 hit in the winning run to defeat the Dukes 3-2 and win the tournament.
“I think we got pumped up in the second game against Seward once we beat them by two!” Shumard said.
