Fairbury hosts first JHigh Track Meet of the year

Yesterday Fairbury JHigh track athletes had their first meet of the year right here at home. It was a dual with Beatrice. Field events started at four with running events beginning at five. There is no final score because it was a dual. The Jeffs will be back in action on Tuesday once again, at home.

“I really like the Beatrice dual because we let the girls choose which events they want to do,” JHigh Track Coach Kristi Peterson said. “It is nice because we are not limited on how many athletes we can enter in each event.  In the rest of the meets, we will only be allowed 3-4 people per event, which causes some of the girls to not be able to get to do what they want to do.  We had every 8th grader get at least one PR and that is what track is all about, competing against yourself to see how much you improve!”

The seventh grade girls had first place finishes in several events. Emily Huss ’23 won the discus with a throw of 59.09 feet. Mikya Lierman ’23 won pole vault at seven feet and the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:12:35. Cobie Cole ’23 won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 19.80 seconds. Cora Tatro ’23 won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 41:46 seconds.

The eighth grade girls also competed well. Jami Mans ’22 and Anna York ’22 tied for first in pole vault at seven feet. Mans also won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 18.93 seconds. Karly McCord ’22 won the shotput with a throw of 25.06 feet.

Champions for the seventh grade boys included Augie Judd in triple jump at 28’06.50, Alex Hunt in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:13.28, and Beckett Chappel won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 39.10. 0.

Corbin Slater won the high jump with a jump of 4’10. Alex Buxton won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.93 and the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 29.27. The eighth grade boys were also the 1600 meter relay champions with a time of 4:24:02. Members of the relay were Alex Buxton, Zane Grizzle, Domenic Hyson, and Jacob Martin.
