Concluding the 2017-2018 wrestling season, the senior wrestlers headed to the mezzanine for the emotional tradition of signing their shoes and hanging them from the rafters.
“It’s tough. We hate to see our seniors leave, but seeing them leave their shoes mean they will always be a part of our program.” Head Wrestling Coach Derek Garfield said.
It was more than just hanging up shoes for the young men. It was hanging up their final season where they shed blood, sweat, and tears.
“It was a sad moment, but it was fun at the same time. We put in our time up their. It’s a reminder that I’ve complete the work Garfield out me through.” Marshall York ‘18 said.
This tradition started when Coach Garfield finished his first year coaching here in Fairbury.
“It’s wrestling tradition when a wrestler retires they leave their shoes in the middle of the mat. Since they can’t leave their shoes in the middle of the mat, I thought it’d be cool to hang them up.” Garfield said.
