The Lady Jeffs lost a tough game to the Heartland Huskies in the second round of Conference tournament action on Tuesday, January 30 in Henderson.
Leading scorer for the Jeffs was Jaelle Johnson ’20 with 10 points on the game, followed by Cora DeBoer ’20 and Jessa Eden ’19 with nine and eight points. Johnson also led the team in free throws and offensive rebounds. Sara Huss ’19 led the Lady Jeffs with total rebounds, with two offensive and seven defensive.
Head coach Amy Engle-Evans explained that the Jeffs struggled against Heartland’s full court and half court traps, which was a major factor in their defeat. They also had difficulties executing plays and performing on offense.
“We played good defense, but offensively, we kept turning it over for easy points for them. We need to work on taking care of the basketball,” DeBoer said.
The Lady Jeffs are entering the final weeks of the 2018 season, with subdistrict action beginning on Monday, February 12.
“It really is a simple game when you break it down and teams that are good do those little things right,” Coach Engle-Evans said. “We have a tough district with state rated Auburn in it, but if we play like we are capable anything could happen.”
The Lady Jeffs will be back in action in regular season play on Tuesday, February 6 against the Seward Bluejays at Fairbury High School.
