Although things are constantly changing at FHS, one award that has continued on through the years is the selection of Junior High Students of the Month. Junior High Students of the Month have been selected every month school has been in session for over ten years, ever since teacher and coach Kristi Peterson took on the role of Junior High guidance counsellor.
The award is handed out after a rigorous selection process. First, Peterson sends a list of all Junior High students to all teachers, and from there teachers nominate specific students for the award. Peterson compiles a list of all the nominees, and then sends the list to Principal Nicholas Kroon. From there, he decides on a female student and a male student from both grades.
“Really, teacher nominations have the biggest pull on who we choose.” Kroon said. “We also look at grades and disciplinary records.”
Peterson says that usually teachers look for three things in students: Cooperation in the class room, how hard they work, and how they treat others.
“We’ve had some “C” students who’ve received the award because of their work ethics.” Peterson said. “You don’t always need to get straight “A’s” to be Student of the Month.”
For December, the students selected were Mariel Ramos ’22, Corbin Slater ’22, Seth Engelman ’23, and Eliana Livingston ’23.
