Trottin’ for TeamMates

On November 23rd, Thanksgiving Day 2017, 46 faithful TeamMates supporters geared up at 7 AM to run the Turkey Trot. The annual 1 mile and 5K walk/run is hosted by the TeamMates Chapter of Fairbury, and was coordinated this year by Tiffany Ebke.

“The turnout this year was good, one of our sponsors, PVI, also supported the event by sending in the registrations for about 18 of their employees and family which was a substantial amount of Turkey Trot participants this year,” Ebke said.

However, without the support of businesses around town the Turkey Trot would not be as successful as it is today. It is their main fundraiser for the year and helps cover basic expenses such as supplies and conducting background checks for new members. It also helps provide scholarship opportunities for seniors within the program.

“Our biggest sponsors are Husker Rehab, as they contribute to the event both with a donation and by providing the insurance for the event. PVI and Westin Foods have been regular “Big Tom Turkey” sponsors since the event started 5 years ago and this year a new “Big Tom” sponsor was Nebraska Machine and Tool in Beatrice,” Ebke said.

Out of the 46 runners, there were six girls basketball members along with Coach Amy Engle-Evans who also ran in the event.

“I thought it was a great thing to do and was another thing to be thankful for… being able to use our legs,” Cora DeBoer ‘20 said.

The next big fundraiser for TeamMates will be on December 9th, in the parking lot of the former Wally’s. Chik-Fil-A will be hosting a rush event with 15 percent of the profits benefiting the Fairbury Chapter.

Members of the Fairbury girls basketball team, Bryn Livingston ’19, Head Coach Amy Engle-Evans, Britney Scheetz ’18, Emily Burkley ’18, Jessa Eden ’19, Cora DeBoer ’20, and Sara Huss ’20, all participated in the Turkey Trot on their day off to support the TeamMates chapter.
