On November 17th, 2017 band teacher Maureen Beck received the Nebraska Music Education Association’s Young Music Educator of the Year Award. This award recognizes band or vocal teachers who are in their third to seventh years of teaching in Nebraska. She was nominated for this award by Stan Johnson who is a retired band teacher from Shickley. Johnson has been a mentor and friend to Beck for many years and is also Isaac, Josh, and Hannah Robertson’s grandpa.
“I felt very honored to be selected for this award. I couldn’t have done it without my parents who inspired me to love music, my high school vocal music teacher, Judy Vrbka, college directors, Jay W. Gilbert, Kurt Runestad, and Kathy Ohlman, my cooperating teacher from Norris, Dr. Evan Lee, and the wonderful administration, staff, parents, and students of Fairbury Public Schools. I am so lucky to be among such a wonderful, caring group of individuals,” Beck said.
