The high school Quiz Bowl team participated at the Nebraska State Fair on Sunday.
Members of the quiz bowl team in attendance were Joshua Robertson ’21, Jordan Ruhnke ’18, Jacob Johnson ’18, Josephine Blatny ’20, Isaac Robertson ’19, Destiny Brown ’19, Jayson Klaumann ’19, and Nichole Harris ’19. The team is coached by Miss Abby Jones.
In their first round robin match Fairbury A–composed of Brown, Ruhnke, Harris, and J. Robertson–fell to Seward Bluejay Pride. Fairbury later lost to Seward again and also to York by 35 points.
Fairbury B (Johnson, Blatny, I. Robertson, and Klaumann) were victorious in their first round against Seward Blue. They lost their next match to York A but came back to defeat Seward again 60-10. In the final round robin match, they again lost to York A. Fairbury B then lost a close match to York B 60-65 in their last match, bringing their final record on the day to 2-3.
“There were a lot of bigger schools there. Seward and York both had three teams each and Lincoln Southeast… it was pretty stiff competition,” Miss Jones said.
While both teams didn’t come out with the record they’d hoped for, group had a positive experience at the State Fair.
“We didn’t do that great, but it was still fun,” Blatny said.
Quiz bowl will commence with an entrance exam to test knowledge for each interested participant. Teams will begin their season following Christmas break. Miss Jones says they plan to participate in the Radio Quiz Bowl once again as well as more traveling competitions.
“[Looking forward to] Just seeing everyone improve and seeing how many people we get interest and growing the program,” Miss Jones said.
