Basketball prepares for a good season

Head Coach Amy Engle directors Cora DeBoer ’20 where to pass during a drill at practice on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

On Monday, Nov. 14, the girls basketball team started the season with high intensity and focus.

The potential for the team comes from a returning group from last year and incoming freshmen to help contribute on all levels of play. Many of the athletes are excited and have high hopes for this season.

“I’m really excited because I think that we are going to have a pretty good season and we have a lot of talent,” Haylee Gray ‘17 said.

This year head coach Amy Engle is stressing fundamentals to the team. Fundamentals are a big part of athletics. Athletes need to be able to do the little things to accomplish big things.

“We want to get better every day, work on the little things and focus on the fundamentals,” Engle said. “We want to be playing our best by February.”

Practices are preparing the team for long and tiring games with a lot of conditioning and drills.

“They are definitely conditioning us so we can run during games,” Toriann LIkens ‘19 said.

As a team, the girls came up with some goals for the upcoming season.

“Win games we should, win the 50/50 games, games that can go either way and surprise some top teams,” Engle said.

The Lady Jeffs season starts Friday, Dec. 2. They will travel to Lincoln Christian to take on the Crusaders last year’s state runner-up in Class C-1.
